IT'S ALL RELATIVE

(Dave Kain dpk1@nysaes.cornell.edu , Entomology, Geneva)

Stop me if this sounds familiar - Last season got off to a roaring start with highs in the 80's recorded in March, and we were about 10-14 days ahead of normal the entire season. Although we started out a bit more slowly this year (didn't hit the 80's until May, which still seems a little early) degree day accumulations indicate that we were again close to 2 weeks ahead of "normal" We may have to change our definition of normal, eh? The big difference between this season and last was the drought, which continues in our neck of the woods.

Following are comparative listings of some of the pest events that occured this season (in Geneva) with calendar and degree-day normals. The values and dates are given +/- one standard deviation; i.e., events should occur within the stated range approximately 7 years out of 10. An asterisk (*) signifies that a record for early occurrence was set or tied.
